For many travelers, extraordinary trips are the ones made up of the most epic moments—the brilliant sunsets, the close encounters, the mountain climbs or lagoon dives.
But I think what sets truly extraordinary travel apart is a focus on the details—and a belief that no detail is too small.
I was reminded of this on a recent trip to South Africa (one of my favorite places in the world). Of course, the game drives were nothing short of exhilarating, and the dramatic landscapes of the Cape Winelands were truly unparalleled.
But one of my favorite memories from this particular trip is a simple one. After a day spent exploring the streets of Cape Town, my husband and I retired to our hotel, a gorgeous, intimate property with a boutique feel.
When we made it up to our room, exhausted after a day out, all we wanted was a stiff, cold drink to unwind with. And what do you know—we opened the door to find two gin and tonic kits waiting for us, with a personal note to enjoy from the hotel manager.
Now, I’ll admit, my husband and I had not been strangers at the hotel bar—and every time we saddled up to the bar, we always ordered the same thing: gin and tonics. The staff had remembered!
I was so impressed that the staff anticipated what we wanted, when we wanted it, and went out of their way to personalize it for us.
